Welcome to the reoccurring feature on Maybe A Weekend, Photo Roulette. I’ve taken a lot of photographs over the years since I bought my first digital cameras. I’ve always subscribed to the theory that it’s better to get a photo now, then regretting not getting the photo later. Every photo tells a story for me even the most random ones. So from time to time I will post a photo here that may seem pointless, but with a little background will give you a greater idea of the man behind Maybe A Weekend.
For today’s entry…
So the date was March 22nd, 2005 and I was on day 1 of a week long road trip to New Mexico. I had just done my first solo road trip in August 2004 to New Mexico, but when I returned home and showed my photos people often commented that I wasn’t in any of them. My previous trip to New Mexico wasn’t that exciting besides the rush from my newfound travel freedom, so I decided to improve on a few aspects. On my previous trip I had stopped at the New Mexico Visitors Center on Interstate 10 outside of Lordsburg, NM and took some photos of the Welcome to New Mexico sign. Upon my return to the Visitors Center, I decided I would take a photo in front of that sign. Since it was 2005, I only had a LG flip phone and my HP point and shot digital camera, so a now modern selfie was out of the question. A tripod would have helped at the moment, but they didn’t support my camera. So I looked around my surroundings and found a creative solution. There was a nearby frost covered picnic table and that became my “tripod.” I lined up the shot, set the timer for 10 seconds, and after a few attempts I got the photo above. During that trip I would find other ways to make a makeshift tripods ranging from the roof of my car to one of my shoes. I eventually did get a tripod, years later, but it’s always good to be adaptable to your surroundings!
